Poch scotches transfer talk

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino appears to have conceded defeat with the transfer deadline looming. Sam Dean reports:
Mauricio Pochettino has said he is not expecting Tottenham Hotspur to make any signings before the close of the transfer window today.
Tottenham have not recruited or sold a single player in this summer’s transfer window but Pochettino insisted he is happy with his squad.
Tottenham waited until yesterday to finally make an opening bid for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, offering £25m for the midfielder.
The offer was rejected by Villa, who no longer need to sell Grealish after the club’s financial troubles were eased by the investment of Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, the new majority owners.
Speaking this afternoon, Pochettino said: “I think it is so difficult now because it is only four hours until the end and I do not have news now. I am sure it will be so difficult. Always, until you finish the game, you cannot say ‘now it’s the end of the game’. But in four hours it will be difficult to sign some players.
“Of course it is difficult to understand for people that Tottenham did not sign or sell a player, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently.
“If we are happy with our squad and cannot improve our squad, sometimes it is better to keep our squad together.”
Pochettino added: “We have a very good squad, with very good players and it is very difficult to add players to that. We didn't sell players and with 25 players in the squad it is difficult to add players. It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players.”
Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele have all been linked with moves away from Tottenham this summer, and Pochettino has asked for their “commitment” for their new season, which begins against Newcastle United this weekend.
“I was so clear with everyone,” Pochettino said. “I need their commitment, 25 players will full commitment but not only [for] one week, two weeks, one month.”
